Reset your Windows Phone 7

If you are a developer, and own one of the prototypes, Microsoft gave away, you might want to reset the device, before showing it a potential customer:

Go to the main screen, settings, info.

On the bottom of the screen there’s the button to reset the device to factory settings.

How to find out, if your app is running in an emulator, or on a real device?

In July’s beta, Microsoft has moved this property from System.Environment to Microsoft.Devices.Environment namespace.

//enum DeviceType contains: Device, Emulator
this.IsEmulator = (Microsoft.Devices.Environment.DeviceType == DeviceType.Emulator);

Windows Marketplace for Mobile: Anwendungen anzeigen

Es ist doch immer wieder erfreulich zu sehen, dass unsere gute, alte “Spin-the-Bottle” App immer noch zu den beliebtesten Apps für Windows Phone gehört !

In diesem Sinne …. viel Spass im Urlaub – egal ob beim Flaschendrehen oder Mäxchen spielen!

… und an den nächsten Games für Windows Phone7 und MS Surface arbeiten wir schon

Windows Phone 7 Database

MS announced, that there will be no database available for 3rd party applications, like on windows mobile 6.5. Instead of using SqlServerCE the user shall use cloud computing or xml files to store data.

So I searched for alternatives, and found a very pretty proof of concept. This guy is using a modified version of csharp-SQLLite to manage a database in Isolated Storage. I tried it a few minutes ago, and although it has some performance issues yet, it’s working also with the beta release of Windows Phone 7 Development Tools.

Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools Beta

The developer Tool for Windows Phone reached beta-status. And Microsoft included into the 380 mb Setup Expression Blend 4 for Windows Phone.

So far the good news.

The bad news: several things have changed from CTP.April to beta – most of all: consolidation and Namespaces. MS advices to totally rebuild your projects, and just copy the content of xaml and xaml.cs files except the template-code.

It took some time, but I got my application running again.

playing with Windows Phone 7

Just playing with Silverlight & Windows Phone 7.

Guess, the result is quite okay so far. For what you can see, I used 2 components:
- PanoramaView Control: look&feel like known from the MS presentations
- AnimateOrientation: does the animation when rotating the phone.

Windows Phone 7 – comeback of transflective TFT

Up to now I was unexcited about Windows Phone 7 – yet today I found something interesting. On Pdamaster it looks like a comeback of the transflective TFT’s on some of the “first wave” Windows Phone 7 devices.

I highly appreciate that – sunlight readability should be an important usability criteria for all handheld devices!

By now I think I changed my mood and as always I will try to get a device for Windows Phone 7 as soon as possible!

Keep your fingers crossed that “Copy and Paste” makes it into the first release!

Windows 7 Phone App Platform – Overview

Das folgende Slide wurde von Microsoft auf der MIX10 in Las Vegas präsentiert und gibt einen guten Überblick über die Windows 7 Phone Application Platform.

Aufgrund der Consumer-Ausrichtung der zukünftigen Version von Windows Phone wird es spannend werden – Win7 Phones im Enterprise Bereich zu positionieren. Obwohl es eine Vielzahl von Stimmen gibt, die die strategische Ausrichtung auf den Consumer Bereich kritisieren, sehe ich hier enormes Potential mit den richtigen Apps 1-to-1 Marketing machen zu können und mit Silverlight lassen sich ohnedies Business Apps auch auf unterschiedlichen Devices und Betriebssystemen deployen. [da kommt es dann nur darafu an, dass man den richtigen Partner für die Abstimmung mit den unterschiedlichen Devices findet

Ich glaube, dass die (breite) Verbreitung von Win7 Phone auch für den Business Bereich wichtig ist und bin schon gespannt wieviel Fahrt Microsoft jetzt bis zum Start der ersten Geräte aufnehmen kann. (CZ)
